Should I wait for Intel's 8th gen CPUs to be released or get a 7th gen now?

I am currently saving for a gaming rig, it'll take til at the earliest of a couple of weeks from now to be able to afford it all and am wondering, is there point in holding on for an 8th gen CPU or jut go with a 7th gen. I don't plan on doing anything CPU intense like video editing

No budget, but currently at £3,000. Can go over that no problem but its gotta be worth the extra waiting time

Wow. So much budget.

The top end CPUs (the 6 cores) aren't out till 2018 I think? Just go with kaby, or maybe ryzen 7 if you want to try the hot new thing that everyone's talking about

Keep in mind that 99,9% the 8th generation will have a different socket. So if you buy 7th generation can't be upgraded unless its another CPU from 7th generation. Or you will have to buy also a new motherboard along with the CPU to pair .

The real question is if you can wait till then.

I wouldn't upgrade yet if I were you, but hey, with that budget you won't mind!

No, Coffee Lake is LGA 1151 just like Skylake and Kaby Lake.

If you need sources:

@OP, Just go with Kaby Lake or Ryzen for now. Your budget should easily be in i7 7700/7700K territory anyway which is the strongest Gaming CPU on the market at this time. You will be able to upgrade to an i7 8xxx later if you need, you'll just need a BIOS update which is easy enough to do. Hope this helps :)

I dont mind spending more but it's gotta be worth the money and worth the waiting and saving all the money I can

8th generation should be better. We don't know yet how much of a difference will have but Intel usually prices a new generation similar to the previous one. So you will get better performance with new technologies and/or better optimisation along with a new socket and chipset.

I would wait for 8th so I can also upgrade to 9th if needed.

It has been reported that both coffee lake, and cannon lake will use 1151 socket. The chipset however will be different. Since you can put the i7 7700k on a z170mb., it is a good bet that both coffee, and cannon lake will also be interchangeable. All 4 of these processor releases are on the 14nm chip.

Now if you decide to go with the 6 or 8 core it would be a good idea to wait as these will release on a new socket. This is with one exception. There is going to be an i5 Coffee Lake that is a 6 core(no hyperthreading) the will release on the socket 1151 200chipset.

I'm currently running an i5 6600k on my socket 1151 200 chipset. I am waiting for that 6 core.
