Hi. I'm going to install a new ssd to my pc. I upgraded from windows 8.1 to windows 10 for free. And I wonder if i will get windows 8.1 on my new ssd.

Solution
Nope , you install windows 10 , but make sure you have it linked to a microsoft account first.

Setup a Microsoft Account and link your current PC to it , then backup whatever you want to save and perform a clean install on your new setup and activate it with your Microsoft account from within windows. Skip the key entry during setup and activate it from within windows with the registered Microsoft Account.

the license doesn't ask for the ssd or hard disk

it goes against the mainboard serial number, when it was activated on windows 8

once you got windows 10, you get the win 8 license disabled(to install win 8 again) and only digital rights on the new one

install windows 10 on the pc again, it should activate itself once it connects to internet, if not, put the serial number form win 8, it should work, or at least i have done it this way a couple times this year

choose the right hard disk or ssd when installing, unplug unwanted or unnecessary hard disks while you install windows 10, to avoid formatting the wrong hard disk

i did it 2 weeks ago, i didn't entered any account, it is activated with the digital rights, i didn't entered the windows key form windows 8, i did it the last year, and got activated

things should be more standard with microsoft, they have too many ways to shave a cat

this leads to confusion

the accounts is helpful btw
