Hey all!

I have just recently completed my first PC build. The very last thing I need to decide on is the monitor I will be purchasing.

My PC is used 100% for gaming purposes and my specs look like this:
CPU: Ryzen 1700
GPU: EVGA GTX 1070 FTW2 ICX
MB: ASRock Taichi x370
RAM: 16GB Corsair LPX 3200 - Currently clocking at 2933
PSU: Evga G2 750W
Samsung SSD
and Wrapped up in a Phanteks Enthoo Pro M

I definitely want to get a 144hz monitor, but I'm not sure if I should go for a 1440p display or a 1080p display.

I'm thinking a 1080p will help me keep my current components for a longer period of time and will help make the most use out of a 144 hz display.

I'm looking at the Acer XB241H which is $529 in Australia

If I step up to a 1440p display then my options are:

24inch Dell S2417G which is on sale for $644 (http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=au&cs=audhs1&l=en&s=dhs&sku=210-AKPU&redirect=1)

27 inch Dell S2716G which is on sale for $799 (http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=au&cs=audhs1&l=en&s=dhs&sku=210-AGRD&redirect=1)

All 3 of the monitors feature G-Sync.
Chosen the dell units as most 27 inch 1440p 144hz g sync are $900+ in Aus

What would your suggestions be?
1080p to make full use of that 144hz screen? Is G-sync worth the extra $100AUD?
Should I try push for 1440p? Is the 24 inch version too small due to scaling?

I mainly play Battlefield 4, Battlefield 1, Overwatch, CS. But want to use my PC for future titles also(not just FPS games)

Thanks!

What do you have at the moment? So what are you coming from. The reason I ask that is to make you think about what you are doing and put it in perspective.

For sure: 1440p is better that 1080p, and 144hz is better than 30hz. I think you know that. So I think you're really asking is where to aim for and a value for money or sweet spot based on you're new build. The answer is a 1440p monitor with the highest refresh rate you can get. Particularly if you already have a 1080p monitor. I mean, what upgrade would another 1080p monitor be really?

So unless you're coming from VGA then 1080p is a dead end solution now. Its 1440p or higher for upgraders. Sure, somewhere out there is the argument that going to 1080p 144hz from a 1080p 75hz is an...

For anyone that has a 1080p monitor already and a GPU that is 9xx or 10xx generation then another 1080p is simply a waste of money. Far better to get a 1440p even if 75hz. It gives you more.

So you have the GPU for 1440p, why wouldn't you get a 1440p monitor? You know it makes sense.

Thanks for the answers guys. I've bit the bullet and picked up a 1440p monitor! Ended up going for an Acer 24" model! Very happy indeed! Thanks again

How do you feel the text and windows and such look, is it very small? Do you use scaling and what scaling do you use? This is one of my biggest fears of going this route (coming from a 90 PPI 1680x1050)?

scaling at 100% is smaller then what i was used to but it allows me to fit so much more on the screen and so i dont mind so much about that.

it really depends how far you sit from your screen.

125% still looks good
