1 laptop using 2 monitors to 1 monitor and a PC using the other

I have a really odd situation, I have no idea how this can work. Essentially, I have a 2 monitor setup for work, but I would like 1 monitor to switch between the work laptop and my main PC. When I try to do an HDMI switcher both of the monitors either change inputs or everything moves to the 1 remaining monitor. Is there any way to just change the input of 1 monitor back and forth without it wrecking everything?

Plug it in to the one monitor using different inputs maybe? Laptop using HDMI and PC using Displayport? Then just switch inputs on the monitor.

Yeah that's pretty much what I ended up doing, figured it out on my own, but at least I know I was on the same track as at least 1 other person!
