Wanting to swap out my i7 3930K for the best cpu my motherboard can take (Alienware 07JNH0 LGA 2011) as I can't be bothered, and afford, a brand new build so wanting to keep everything in my current build but upgrade the cpu. I was thinking of the E5 2690 v1 or even E5 2690 v2.
I mostly use my pc for rendering and video editing with Vegas Pro. I do a moderate amount of gaming @ 1080 but gaming is not my priority.
Any help or advice much appreciated.
Build:
i7 3930K
GTX 690
32 gig ram
Samsung evo SSD (250gb)
Kingstone 750 SSD
3x1 gb hard drives
Alienware 07JNH0 Motherboard (07 bio version)

i7-4960X Six Core Extreme Edition and Xeon CPU E5-2680 are the highest I have seen any benchmarks on, you may want to call and find out what the max is since finding a support list or complete service manual is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Thanks. Yeah Dells BIOS is what is worrying me. I can't even overclock my 3930K due to Dell gimping the BIOS. The only option to overclock is to pay Dell $100 to do it for me.

"finding a support list or complete service manual is like looking for a needle in a haystack." Yeah, that's pretty much why I resorted to Toms Hardware. And Youtube is virtually useless if you want anything other than gaming performance regarding cpu performance.
3930k to a 4960x isn't the big upgrade I was looking for but might play it safe and just shove a 4960x in, but it's a bit of a waste seeing as I can't overclock the 4960x on the mobo I have.
The E5 2680 is virtually the same as the 2690 (both 8 core) but slightly under clocked. Should be able to use a 2690 if people have used 2680's.
Just not sure if the Xeon 2690 is better than the 4960x... Xeon 2690=2 extra cores but 2.9GHz compaired to 4960x 6 cores but @3.6 Ghz.
The Xeon 2690 v2 (10 cores @3.0GHz) looks promising and have seen them for as low as $450... might try that, buy a new mobo for it and gut my Alienware Aurora R4.
Thanks.

Thanks.
Doesn't mention Xeons in that list... doesn't mention the i7 3970x either, which I find strange.

I can confirm that the motherboard Alienware 07JNH0 (Aurora R4) does support the xeon E5-2690 v1.

With turbo boost on, it does 3.2-3.3 ghz on all 8 cores at full load (Cruncher or Intelburn).
Lighter loads are from 3.5-3.7 ghz.

CINEBENCH R15 : 1154 to 1163
Temps are < 60 Celsius using intelburn @ very high RAM settings x 15 cycles ((Scythe Ninja 4 heatsink)
Bios A11
