DVI works on one monitor but not 2 others of different brand

This is a weird monitor issue. I have 2 monitors hooked up to my Dell laptop with the E-port that has one DVI and one VGA port. One of the monitors is a 24" ViewSonic via VGA and the other is a smaller Dell monitor via DVI. I decided to replace the smaller monitor with an identical ViewSonic. However, when I plug in either of the ViewSonics with the DVI cable they have green and red lines across the display. This is the same cable I used for the Dell monitor - which I have gone back to using and it is working fine. Both monitors are fine with the VGA cord. Any suggestions? This is making me crazy! Thanks!!!

I should have said, the drivers are updated and I have tried changing the refresh rate.
