I am wondering if my setup can handle running games on ultra still having over 60 fps in 1440P with a 1m/s response time at 144hz. Also is 1440p really worth the price? Does it really look sharper?
Setup:
Graphics: gtx 1070
CPU: intel Core i7 3820 running at 3.60 Ghz
16 gigs of ram

If you have your system setup already, you may be able to use something like DSR to give you an idea of how the games you play will perform at 2560 x 1440.

You setup DSR in the Nvidia control panel. If you are using a 1920 x 1080(1080p) screen right now you will want to add 1.78x. Remember to add and then apply it.

You should now be able to fire up a game and try 2560 x 1440. It will not look as good as native 2560 x 1440, but you are after the performance level.

DSR 4x would look the best(works similar the very old versions of AA and it divides evenly), but it is rendering at 3840 x 2160(4k) by that point.

I was considering 1080p at 144hz because it does seem like 1440p for games like GTA 5 or Battlefield 1 would be hard on a 1070.

Most of these types of concerns/questions can be solved by asking your self WHAT you really will be doing with your set up. When I was searching.. I had to come to the conclusion I'm gonna pretty much be playing the SAME exact games I'm playing now with a few exceptions.. So it's better to get a REALLY good 1080p 144 hrz monitor for a bit less than a "ok" 1440p one.

My conclusion is that you change your monitor far less often than you change your GPU. So when you do, you need to aim high.

I consider 1080p to be effectively dead now. It will be around for a while, but I don't see it as a worthwhile investment. Far better to get a 1440p if you want to upgrade. Sure, if your today 1080p goes fizzle and you need to replace then another 1080p isn't going to be a backward step. If you're planning an upgrade, then you should make sure it is an upgrade.

There is an argument that going from 1080p 75hz to 1080p 144hz or greater is an upgrade. It is, but I'd question if its an worthwhile one over going to 1440p at 144hz.

Oh, and OP - you're 1070 will be fine with either 1080p or 1440p, but if it was me I would be looking for a 1440p with the highest refresh rate, at the best price.

1080p isn't dead, it's just reached it's summit.
