No signal when I connect vga cable

Today my brother got a new computer and I went ahead and set up the only thing Was neaither the computer or monitor came with a vga cable to I took mine from my computer and used that the problem was that it kept saying no signal for 20-30 mins then randomly it just came on . So after that I needed a another cable to put back into my computer and when I put it in I got the exact same issue but it's been hours now and still nothing it working any help ?
