Can you play 1080p 144Hz on a 1440p 144Hz monitor?

I have a Dell S2417DG which is 1440p 144/165 Hz g-sync. I played ME Andromeda at 1080p 165 Hz (in-game resolution setting) with the monitor running its native 1440p so the GPU upscales. It looked very good to me and smooth. I can tell the difference in clarity more when playing ghost recon wildlands but I don't remember it being too bad, I didn't spend much time playing at that resolution though. There is so much detail in that game that it's easier to tell.

What is it exactly you are asking, if it's possible or how well it works?
