Easy way to sync folders?

Is there a way to copy contents from one folder to another and have it only copy things that are different? I'm basically looking for a way to make a copy of folder in another location (a backup) and refresh the backup without copying everything over again. I don't need everything elaborate, but not copying things with the same name is too simplistic since the content of spreadsheets (for example) can change. Copying everything takes too long.
