Yesterday i bought a new monitor which has a Display port and a HDMI port and VGA. My other monitor is already using the HDMI port for the GPU, so I couldn't use that. I tried plugging in a HDMI straight to the motherboard which didn't work for some reason (i assumed because it was going to the motherboard and not the GPU) I bought a DVI to display port for my monitor and plugged it in, but it still doesn't work? Please help!

Solution

i have tried a DVI to DVI on a different monitor and that works, showing that the port on the back of the PC is ok. This must mean it's the wire, correct? I don't know how this could be since I only got the wire today but i suppose this must be it. I was thinking about buying a DP to VGA to be safe - something like this!? - https://www.amazon.co.uk/DisplayPort-Benfei-Display-Adapter-Gold-Plated/dp/B01GPMRYNM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1499437016&sr=8-4&keywords=displayport+male+to+vga+male

Once you insert a GPU, all graphics are directed to and from the GPU so your on board (motherboard connector) won't work. What graphics card are you using? If it has two DVI ports, I recommend you get two DVI cables and connect both monitors to the GPU. then simply press (windows key + P) and click extend. I can direct you further once you tell me what kind of card it is.

Hope this helped :)

I am using the Geforce GTX 750. The monitors i have only have a display port and a HDMI. The GPU ports are 1 HDMI, 1 VGA, and 1 DVI port which aren't great.

Connect one monitor to the GPU using HDMI and the other to the GPU using DVI. Repeat the steps in my previous answer. Also go to Nvidia control panel and click "set up multiple displays" and select your primary/secondary monitor. That should work. If not, try re-installing your drivers.

You'd need something like https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=displayport+male+to+vga+active+adapter
