i7-7700 or i5-7600K Without Overclocking

Hi all,

I have 2 computer builds that i'm thinking about:

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/tkqVzM

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/mvdtTH

The differences are that the first one has a CPU that cant be overclocked, therefore saving on the cooler and motherboard. The second one you can overclock so it costs more for the motherboard and cooler.

Firstly, i probably wouldn't overclock. So just looking at base stats, which build would you recommend? I thought it'd be obvious and would be the 7700 however the 7700 only has a frequency of 3.6GHz whilst the 7600k has a base frequency on 3.8GHz.

Surely having a 7700 should be exactly the same as a 7700k without overclocking it? However the base frequency for a 7700k is 4.2GHz

So my 3 questions:
1) Am i right in saying a 7700 is worse than an underclocked i5-7600k and 7700k?
2) Which build would you have if you weren't planning on overclocking?
3) Any suggestions for improvements?

Note: This will be predominantly a gaming PC

Thanks

i7 7700.

Without a doubt.

The i7's are the best CPU's for gaming even though it my look like the i5's beat them.

Their motherboard sockets are optimised for gaming anyways.

It would be wise to note that if you were to overclock, the i5 and i7's are supposedly power hungry, making them heat up... Alot.

A average air cooler wouldn't be able to keep up for long.

the i7 7700 is probably better, games are starting to use more and more cpu power, and the i7 comes with 8 threads which will definetly help in cpu heavy games. Both are fine chips though, but if you dont feel like overclocking than the i7 7700 is the simple choice, it will also last you longer than an i5. :)
