Optical drives no longer recognized

Satellite C55 laptop. O/S upgraded to Windows 10 Creator release. Laptop no longer recognizes internal or external optical drives.

Does it not show the optical drive´s icon or did you try inserting a DVD or similar and the media couldn´t be opened?

The solution turned out to be very simple and on the Toshiba Web site; based on the Web page the problem has been around since Windows 8 (2012). Deleting the Toshiba Recovery Media Creator program and Toshiba Disk Creator program (if present) fixes the problem.
