Out of Range!

I've have a BenQ XL272OZ running at 144hz , it's on a displayport and from time to time it will go black and say "Out of Range!" And then I have to unplug and plug my display port back into my Graphics card , I have a GTX 970 4GB

This tends to occur when the video adapter setting for updating the screens refresh rate is incompatible with the monitor.
Did you go into Nvidia control panel to change it to 144 Hz?

Nope , I went into Windows display settings and changed it to 144hz.

You may have to try checking monitor in device manager. Its possible this is something that can only be changed in safe mod. If that doesn't help either way try a new cable. The cable could be iffy.
