How can I record audio from an AUX?

I'm trying to capture audio from my 3DS by using a male to male AUX, connecting the 3DS to my PC. I initially tried with my MacBook air, only to find that only the MacBook pro allows the 3.5mm port to be used as a line in. Do I need to buy some kind of sound card to allow me to do this? A solution to record the audio on either PC or mac would be fine!

I think it can be done using any generic USB sound card that has 3.5mm female jack and can be connected to any PC via USB. Once, you can get the output on the computer, you can use any audio capturing tool to record the audio.
