My specs are GTX 970 4gb, AMD 8350fx 4.0ghz, 8gbs, etc. I recently bought a 1440p (HP Pavilion 32in UHD) monitor under the assumption that some games would be supported at this resolution with my specs but I'm a bit wrong. League of Legends and Overwatch on ultra at 1440p run sluggish but I was told would work well with my specs. So what should I do? Return and get a 1080p then save up for better specs or just keep?

Solution
Keep your monitor, and play at 1080p and maybe 1440p on certain titles. Then try and save up some money, to upgrade your system. I would recommend at least a 980ti with a better processor like an i5-4670k at least, for 1440p gaming on newer titles.

Turn down anti-aliasing in the settings (to some extent your higher resolution monitor naturally helps with aliasing), and if there are any settings for texture and model detail/quality or something like that, turn those down too. The 4 gb (and technically 3.5 for the 970!) can be really hurt by the higher resolution because it takes more VRAM. Overwatch and LoL aren't exactly graphical powerhouses, you should be able to get acceptable performance without sacrificing too much, but anyone who told you ultra was a slam dunk was a liar. The 970 won't be able to handle 1440 for too much longer though, so look to something like a 1070. Be aware prices are crazy inflated because of cryptocurrency miners buying lots of cards so be careful you don't overpay for anything.

Performance likely has improved a bit since then but:

1) GPU scaling (which assumes a better CPU) is:
90FPS average

2) CPU scaling:
146FPS average at 1920x1080

Based on that, it sounds like you should be able to get to roughly 90FPS at 2560x1440 since the GPU is likely the benchmark much of the time, so not sure what you mean by "sluggish".

And here's LOL:

From what I'm reading you shouldn't drop below 60FPS with fairly high graphics quality on your FX-8350 + GTX970 rig.
