Hi All,

Is buying a used GTX 980ti for $350 a good middle ground for price/performance? I want to bump up my gaming specs and want a new NVIDIA card (Hackintosh). Unfortunately, I can't afford the newer cards (GTX 1070 or GTX 1080), so I'm thinking a used 980ti might be a good a way to go.

I game fairly often with my current build (GA-Z97X-UD5H, i5 4460, GTX 960 SSC (4GB), 16 GB RAM). Nothing outlandish in terms of performance. I have a 4k monitor, but play at 1080p with mid-range quality settings on older games (e.g., Skyrim). I'll probably play Fallout 4 next.

My question: Given the newer NVIDIA cards on the market, is a used GTX 980ti for $350 a good middle ground?

Appreciate any thoughts you might have.

I recently sold one for about that price on ebay.
It was a EVGA unit which had the remains of a transferrable 3 year warranty.
Fair value, I would say.
I used it with a 4k monitor and a 2560 x 1600 monitor.
It really was ok, giving 60fps on skyrim and civ 4/5 most of the time with high settings.

One good thing about buying used is that you get a fair price/performance purchase.
Do carefully evaluate the seller and other factors. If you buy on ebay from a reputable seller and pay with paypal, you are relatively well protected.

980 Ti = GTX 1070 roughly. So yes, still a very powerful card. I can still max everything with playable frame rates at 1440p with mine.

Playing Fallout 4 for the second time. All settings maxed including godrays at 1440p and I have the high res texture pack installed. Usually a steady 60 FPS. There are some drops to ~ 50 FPS ( still mostly smooth ) in certain places but it happens to everyone. It's the game.

I can't promise you will see the same performance because I have an i7 but it should do well. Better than the 960 you have now, that's for sure.
