Hi
My parents want their old photos off of their old computer, It was a vista machine if that makes any difference.
I have tried a sata to usb adaptor and the drive was not detected at all, i tried disk management everything I could find on the internet but the drive was not detected at all, though it had power and i could hear it spin up. I cant put it back in the old machine as i think the cpu has died.
Any help please

What type of drive is it, and what exact "sata to usb adaptor" are you using?

and its possible for it to spin up though still not get detected

have had it a couple of times before--even though other drives worked fine

using a samsung usb to sata adapter

try connecting it to your pc as a second hard drive instead

"a generic brand adapter" tells us nothing.
I asked, because a single USB port will not supply the correct power to a 3.5" drive.

You need a USB-SATA thing that also plugs into the wall to provide the correct power to the drive.
