Recently got a old laptop from someone, Has a nice i7 5th gen but a very slow harddrive. I want to install a SSD and take the Harddrive out and leave it out. But the OS key is under the Harddrive and I dont want to clone it either. I just want a fresh boot on ssd on this laptop. Do I need to purchase w10? Or can i transfer the OS license to the ssd and delete the OS on the Harddrive?

Solution

If the current Win 10 on the HDD is valid and activated, you don't need to buy a new license for a swap to a new drive.

Just swap drives and install the OS on the new SSD. It should activate itself once it goes online.
