Vote Now! $500 Budget Category

**THE VOTING PERIOD IS NOW OPEN** PLEASE FOLLOW THIS LINK TO VOTE.
We will accept votes on the Best PC Build until 9/20. Thanks for participating!

The Best PC Builds. Our title is practically self-explanatory. Unlike the System Builder Marathon, these configurations are not chosen by Tom's Hardware's editors. They are submitted and selected by our forum members based on defined pricing tiers. Every so often, we ask the community for its help picking parts based on performance and features for the price.

With Fall soon upon us, and Ryzen available to compete with Intel at every budget category, the time has come to ask Tom's Hardware members to once again submit their Best Builds. We're raising the stakes this time around, and will be sending members with winning submissions Newegg gift card good for $100.

We are accepting submission in each budget category until Thursday, September 14th. After the submission period will but the top builds to a Community vote. The builds with the most votes in each category will be crowned the Best Build.

This thread is for the $500 budget category. Please only submit builds within the $500 budget category to this thread. All other builds will be disqualified.

Please make sure to follow the ground rules below. Any builds over budget will be disqualified.

Here are the ground rules:
  • Only one build per budget category, per user. Multiple builds from a single user or duplicate accounts will be disqualified.
  • Do not go over budget.
  • Use only Amazon OR Newegg to source parts.
  • Use list prices only: coupons, rebates, bundles or any other limited-time offers will not be accepted.
  • Do not include shipping or tax in your final budget.
  • Do not include the Operating System, Monitor or VR Headset, Keyboard, Mouse or Gamepad.
  • Do not put your forum handle in the name of your build, and avoid odd capitalizations & symbols.
  • Provide links to the Amazon or Newegg product pages of each component — we encourage users to use PCPartPicker's System Build for speedy construction. Do not post a link to your build, but rather please be sure to export as BBCode for a quick copy/paste to the forums.

Here are links to all seven build categories:

$500 Budget Build
$750 Budget Build
$1000 Budget Build
$1250 Budget Build

  3. Question for ITX builds do we still have to insure they have a built in WiFi ability?
  4. ^^ Also I assume we don't need to name them anymore since it wasn't mentioned?
And once again to double check; Newegg Marketplace is excluded correct?

It's mentioned but in a round about way. "Do not put your forum handle in the name of your build, and avoid odd capitalizations & symbols."
  6. If you don't have to include shipping, can someone tell me how to remove it on PC Part Picker? I'm $0.98 over right now, but I have a dollar in shipping that would let it be qualified.
Would I be allowed to go into the copied and pasted thing and just subtract my 99 cents in shipping?

We can see your non ship build cost by following your link into PCpartpicker. But if you want to mod your post the I'd just add this after your PCpartpicker paste

    Shipping: <$$$>
    Build Cost: $$$
  9. Power supply isn't the greatest compared to say an S12II, but it'll run a 1060 OC'd and G4560 without any issue whatsoever.
The Antec VP is still higher quality than an EVGA B1 unit.

  11. Need clarification on the rules. The third bullet point says, "Use only Amazon OR Newegg to source parts." Does this mean we can only use one or the other, not both? Most of the builds I'm seeing use both.

The parts can come from both stores. You don't need to show loyalty to just one.

4-Core Ryzen paired with GTX 1050 Ti that is not totally overpriced from miners. A little extra of the budget went into storage because game sizes are so huge nowadays and at least its 7200RPM. The case may actually pass off as a high-end rig to an indiscriminating eye.

I managed to fit a 1060 6GB in this rig. The dual core CPU can run most games. The 1060 6GB is the real star of the show here. It can push 1080p@ultra@60fps. Going up to 1440p the 1060 can still do pretty well thanks to its 6GB of Vram.

It's called the compromiser because it compromises a lot on CPU horsepower and HDD space to fit the 1060 6GB.

  48. Borg Box Recycling

Want to feel good about helping the environment while having a kick-ass gaming experience at the same time? What if I said you could have your cake and eat it in the form of an i5 + GTX1060 6GB combo? All in a case that's not going to warp or rattle even after going thru WW3? Then read on.

    Video Card: GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GV-N1060IXOC-6GD ($269.99 @ NewEgg)
    Memory: NEMIX RAM 4GB (2 X 2GB) DDR3 1600MHz ($29.99 @ NewEgg)
    Everything Else: HP Z220 Core i5 3.30 GHz 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM 500 GB HDD ($199.00 @ Amazon) (spec-sheet)
    Base Total: $498.99

CPU is going to be either i5-3470 or E3-1230v2 depending what you get, which is going to be only 1-5% slower than Ryzen 1300X with a GTX 1060 6GB (Source).

PSU is a Delta DPS-400AB-13 A, Gold Rated and comes with a 6-pin cable for the video card. These high-end workstations were designed to run a Quadro K4000 with no issues, which has the same power draw as the old GTX 460, so should have no problems with the much more efficient 1060.(PSU spec-sheet)

RAM I'm assuming is non-ECC, no way to tell till you get the box delivered. Either way that's not an issue since you can get the following instead for cheaper actually.
ECC Memory: NEMIX RAM 4GB DDR3-1600MHz ECC ($19.99 @ NewEgg)

Case is going to be super solid and well-build, much better than anything you could get for under $60 brand-new. These machines can be spec'd from $1100 to $3000+ for professional use so you're getting 10x the quality for the price! And finally, you can feel good about reducing e-waste all while gaming at a solid 60+ fps + high-settings @1080p.

    Remember: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!
