Is there any point to watching 4k videos on a 1440p screen? Or just stick to 1080p? If they were free content which?

I've heard with gaming you can scale down and get improved results but what about with video that was put out in a higher resolution?

Depends on content. Mostly 4K content on Youtube have a 2K downscale option which will give you 1440p content. But if not then depending on the data rates of your internet provider and the speed you get for buffering you can choose any. It is dependent on personal desire, requirement and opinion. Go for 4K and then try 1080p if you can see noticeable difference when switching between them then stick with 4K otherwise go for 1080p.
