Monitor/TV Setup Help

If I want to use a TV for what my monitor is showing, do I need to plug the TV into the computer, or do I need it to plug into the existing monitor that I want it to copy the screen off of?

Plug both into the computer, right click on the desktop and click display settings, set to duplication mode.

The TV in my bedroom isn't a smart TV. I have my laptop sitting 90degrees from the TV connected by an HDMI cable. I normally use extend, but for ease I use duplication mode as suggested above. Anything that happens on the laptop screen happens on the TV. When I want to stream something in the bedroom I fire up the laptop and and it plays on both screens.
