First compact gaming PC build

Well my father wants a new PC that he's going to hook up to a HDTV and use for some gaming purposes and I've been tasked with putting it together. Unfortunately work has been a bit of a mess lately and I haven't had as much time as I'd like to do component research.

My main challenge is that I'm looking for something more compact that usual. I'll probably end up using a Micro-ATX motherboard rather than the usual ATX, but I'm looking for a case compact enough where it's not much larger than a typical game console, and more importantly one with a cooling setup that would allow it to lie horizontal so there is room for it on the cabinet underneath the wall-mounted TV.

He says he isn't concerned about it running 4K and says he doesn't want genuine top-of-the-line performance but naturally it's still got to look good enough on a large screen. He might be playing some Battlefield 1 and Destiny 2 on it so it's got to be capable of running those well. I tend to lean towards Intel and Nvidia CPU/GPUs but that doesn't really matter, I've used plenty of AMD stuff in the past.

Price range? Well trying to get an answer out of him is a challenge. He doesn't want to order everything at once so I'll figure I'll be ordering the motherboard CPU and memory first and then move on from there.

I can probably sort out the GPU, CPU, memory and storage myself, my main concern is jamming everything in a smaller box than usual and keeping it cool. So any advice or build ideas?

Thanks for any input.

Something like this might be a good option: https://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/Zotac-ZBOX-EN1060K-BE-Barebone-SSD_1168590.html

It's a very compact case, with a decent processor (7th gen core i5, 4 cores), a more than decent GPU (GTX 1060 6GB), etc. Top notch hardware in a very compact case. There are also higher products in the same range with even better GPUs (and CPUs, but also higher prices, naturally).

Here's a review: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/11/zotac-zbox-en1060-review-nvidia/

Apparently, it's quiet even when under load, so that makes it good for the living room.

Now these are barebones, so you buy the case with the motherboard, cpu and gpu inside of it (plus sound and LAN, and the power brick), but you have to buy memory (SO-DIMMS, memory for laptops) and a hard drive (it can accept 2.5'' SSDs or M.2 sticks). It's not super cheap, but it's super compact! And if he intends to play on a FHD TV (1080p), plenty powerful to ensure a steady 60 FPS.

There are similar little boxes from Gigabyte and from Intel (although intel's don't include discrete GPUs, so not great for gaming), it's worth checking them too.

You can of course try to find a HTPC case and cram handpicked hardware inside, as you intended ;)

Hope this helps! :)

The 1070 should keep up with most games for a few years.

If it's a 2k TV, upgrade to a 1070.
