My current PC build:
i5 6600k
GTX 1070
16GB RAM

My dilemma is weather I should get a 24" 1080p 144hz gaming monitor or a 27" 1440p 144hz gaming monitor.

Any help would be welcome! Thanks!

A GTX 1070 is good for about 70FPS maxed out at 1440p, in most recent titles. Older games will run much faster, so you can take advantage of the 144hz now. As mentioned above, you can always reduce settings to improve framerates, up to the limits of your CPU.

You can also look at it as planning for the future. You'll likely keep that monitor far longer then the GPU. And when you drop in a GTX 3070 or something it will then be a good match.

Of course there is the cost difference and the potential release of better monitors in the future.
