Hi,

I have 3 monitors (2x18.5" Asus VS197DE and 1x34" Ultrawide LG 34UM68).

My graphics card is an MSI GTX 970.

The LG is plugged in using a DP to DP cable.
One Asus is plugged in using a DVI-I to VGA, the other with HDMI to VGA.

I haven't used any adapters on the ends of the cables. I just ordered them for this purpose.

Some people have talked about active adapters in similar questions, but I'm not quite sure what that means, since the cables I bought were made for these connections.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Solution
Your card only outputs ONE analog signal through the DVI-I port, the DVI-D port does NOT output an analog signal nor does the HDMI port, this is why an ACTIVE adapter is required.

Do I need to buy a DAC for the cable? Or do I need to use the DVI-D port?

So... what exactly is the problem? One monitor not working? All three not working?

What HDMI to VGA adapter wouldn't have a DAC? HDMI doesn't support passive VGA adapters, so they don't exist.

Ones like this :-

they do exist and they don't work.

There are plenty of active adapters that look like that:
For example: https://www.amazon.com/XF-TIMES-Adapter-Digital-Converter/dp/B01LAYVT0O/

I'm sure someone somewhere sells a fake HDMI to VGA adapter with no converter inside but it's hardly a widespread concern.
