So I decided to upgrade my i5 4460 to a i7 4790k. I popped it into the mobo, my PC booted up fine and Windows desktop was fine also. I launched Battlefield 1, it loaded into a game but within a few minutes it locked up the sound looped and the picture froze only way to reset was hard reset. So I reboot, open up Battlefield again and this time it doesn't load into the game before freezing.
I tried a less graphically and cpu demanding game Max Payne, seemed to run fine I only ran it for around 10 minutes but no issue. I tried Overwatch next, lasted around 5 minutes, then locked up like Battlefield did.
I know it might not be the cpu itself but it was second hand, so I took it back to the store and got another i7 4790k. I put this 'new' one in ( as this is also a second hand one). It boots fine, windows desktop works fine like last chip. But this time, the audio has intense crackling and video's have messed up after images in large square. I reboot a few times and this time It freezes as soon as I log in on windows. I reboot and I get error that 'iastor.sys' is missing or corrupt. Now I cannot even get into windows as this error persists.
When I put back in my i5 4460 everything works flawlessly, but these 4790k's seem to have their own issues.
Things I have done so far:
- Updated BIOS
- Updated audio, gpu and all other drivers.
- I ran the Prime95 test on the first 4790k and after 5minutes the temps reached 90c and my PC froze and I had to hard reset. I have not tried this test on the second 4790k as I cant get into Windows with it now.
- Turned of Turbo Clock just to see, made no difference on first 4790k.
-Re-downloaded Intel Rapid Storage Technology as I heard iastor.sys is related to that, but the error still persists.
I should also mention that with both 4790k's and original 4460 I am using the 4460's stock fan (which I know is not great idea to use on the i7's).
My PSU is EVGA 600 (Bronze) which is approaching 3 years old.
I also run a GTX 1080
8GB cheap RAM, single stick
1tb SATA and 2 TB SATA
ASUS rock H97 Anniversary
1440p 144hz G-sync Predator Monitor
I am just confused as both 4790k's had their own unique issues, the second one seeming to be able to actually play the games while it was able to before the iastor.sys error, but had audio and video player issues.
Could these issue be due to PSU? its getting on in age and my rig maybe pushes it a bit, but everything is running stock not oc so thought would be okay.
Maybe the stock i5 cooler i'm using is inadequate. The temperatures were high during gaming and prime 95 test.
Or could it be the cpu's themselves? they are both second hand so no way of telling if they were looked after, but they both seemed to boot into windows (the second 4790k did at first, but iastor.sys error means it won't now.
Any help would be appreciated I will post any extra info if you need me to really want this fixed.
