Dual Monitors Issue

I am trying to set up dual monitors. I am a radio producer but I'm not IT savvy per se ( I grew up with it so I know enough) My monitor is set up through a VGA cord. I bought a VGA splitter and have that plugged into the computer then each side plugged into a monitor. I can't set it up to extend. They show the same thing. How do I fix this??

That's what splitters do--just clone the displays. If you wanted independent displays you would need a GPU with multiple outputs, or to use a special converter box that reports to the PC a single monitor with double the horizontal resolution, then itself splits that into two outputs. One such box is the Matrox DualHead2Go.
