I recently purchased a (used) gaming laptop which originally came with 8.1, but it was terrible to say the least even tho I did a fresh format and full install of 8.1 when I got it. Driver issues, crashes, hangs and freezes, especially on the sign in screen. Even start up repair was total crap. I decided I would rather have a 30 day trial of 10 than reinstalling windows hate.1. LOL. When I did, it says windows is activated, never even asked for a key. I go to system and it says windows is activated, does that mean it is for good? Maybe my Asus had a free upgrade? both editions (8.1 and 10) were home by the way.

the free upgrade never really ended as far as I've seen. They just stopped advertising for it.

Yes, you're probably good to go.
The official free Upgrade period ran out July 2016.
But it seems to still work.
