Can I take a hard drive and put it in a new build?
What i'm asking is, instead of buying a new os can I just take the hard drive with the os and put it in a new build?

Nope, you can use the drive but unless you use the same platform windows won't boot.

Format your drive.
Build your PC.
Re-install the OS you had on the old computer. Or get a new one.
(If your looking to save money, there are several versions of Linux that are free.)

Well Yes you can take the Harddrive and insert it into the new system but No for the OS drive if you are thinking your currrent OS still works on new PC then no it wont work for new PC you need to do a fresh install of windows

Yes, I would definitely try that if I were planning on throwing the old PC in the trash can. You can't run two instances of Windows with one license.
