Solved. Had problem connecting HP elitedesk to Panasonic TV. Sat box worked OK via HDMI cable? PC worked OK with other TV using dp to HDMI cable? Another pc displayed OK on Panasonic TV? So pc OK and TV OK? So problem must with cable? Correct!
Pc sends signal out as display port signal. Does not convert to HDMI. Why should it? It assumes other end of cable plugged into another display port!
Cable was a passive cable which means it changes wires from display port to HDMI but does not convert them. Display port and HDMI signals ate not the same!
Newer tvs sets have built in converters so pc works with them no probs. My TV was older tech so no converter.
Solution was buy an active display port to HDMI adaptor.
Boom no problems. So if you are trying to connect your pc to TV via display port to HDMI note!
If telly is older ( over 5 years) get an active adaptor. Only £10 from amazon and worth every penny!

Solution

DisplayPort ports send out HDMI signals if you use a DP to HDMI passive adapter, not DisplayPort signals. The passive adapter does not need to convert the signals because they are already HDMI to begin with.

However, support for HDMI passive adapters is an optional feature, so perhaps if you have an older system then it does not support them.
