I have bought a new monitor for my home setup. It is the following [http://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-29UM68-P-ultrawide-monitor]

Furthermore I have a GTX 980 G1 graphics card.

I can see, that the display have DisplayPort 1.2, but I have found that many DisplayPort 1.3 cables are cheaper. But I have also heard that I need to watch out for pin 20 in DispalyPort 1.3, since it carries power, and therefore can damage hardware not made for it. So my question is, qould I be able to use a DisplayPort 1.3 cable with my current Graphics card and monitor, without damageing neither?

DisplayPort cables don't have versions. Just get any cable certified by VESA and you are good to go.
