12:5 vs 16:9

Since I'm getting an SLI capable motherboard after Christmas and I'm getting another 1070 FOR Christmas, I want to add three more screens to my existing surround matrix.

I've got three 16:10 monitors at 4320x900 (24:5). I want to bump that to 4320x1800 (24:10, or 12:5).

Is 12:5 wider than 16:9? My 1070 can definitely handle my current resolution without problems, but I'm a little worried about scaling. Will I be able to run my games at 4320x1800 without any problems with SLI 1070s?

LOL - I'd blame the cat, too. Death doesn't stop them.

This is the Samsung - the resolution is not quite as widescreen as your current setup, but it's still insane!

When I read about it, I thought I might want it, but it wasn't out at the time I was monitor-hunting. I definitely appreciate the extra vertical resolution of my current monitor, though.

It's 2 million less pixels than 4K.

4320*1800 is 7.7 million
3840*2160 is 9.5 million

I play Skyrim and Fallout 4 and TW3. Those are my most demanding games, the rest are easy peasy on my 1070 (400+ FPS in NFS: Carbon).

Uh, 3840x2160 is about 8.3 million. So, 4320*1800 is around a half million fewer pixels.

24:10 is wider than 16:9. It's also wider than 21:9. If we try to recalculate it to a something:9, the formula would be 9/10 x 24. So, it's 21.6:9.

My mistake, I was doing the math for cinematic 4K, which is wider.

94%...that's pretty close. If I was told I had a 94% chance of winning the lottery I'd play.

Skyrim's a can of mixed nuts on this one, soem cards and drivers work well and others don't. I'm not gonna overclock them (SLI 1070s) until I get a 1KW power supply...and that's still a lot of money in addition to another 1070.

Will my Xeon be able to handle the scaling? I know I can overclock it on Z77 but I'd like to avoid that.

You can when you need to upgrade just sell the 1070 and get a 1080 or up (or the new stuff thats launching next year) then you don't need a new psu.

I don't want a "1080 or up". I hate selling my old hardware, especially a special edition 1070 like mine. And I need a new PSU anyway, mine's old. Nothing wrong with it, just want a new one so here's my excuse.

Unfortunately, the reality is that a 1080Ti is the only thing that can (usually) manage very high quality settings at a 4K (or approximately 4K) resolution. SLI will work in some cases, but it's not exhaustively supported, and seems to be falling by the wayside.

The upside is that if you have two 1070s, given their still-elevated prices from cryptomining, you might be able to sell them both for almost as much as you'd pay for a new 1080Ti.

Dual 1070s will do it, IF the games in question support SLI.

@King_V I was going to suggest that, but I realized a 1080 Ti isn't going to have 6 video outputs. If the monitors have DP in and out, you could maybe daisy chain a few together to possibly get around that, but other than that I don't know how to get 6 monitors working with a single graphics card.

I was about to bring that up. Very few cards have 6 capable outputs, the 1080Ti AFAIK only has 5.

These are HP Compaq LA1905wg screens, I paid $25 each and $75 for three of them, a guy on Craigslist gets them from his tech support IT person jobthing and sells them. Personally, I think they're fantastic, although some people may prefer better, wider, 1080p IPS LED screens or whatever. I don't, what I have has worked flawlessly ever since I got them, and they're also aesthetically pleasing.

A lot of people hate bezels, I don't mind them because they help with organization anyway.

Hmm, good point, I think I hadn't quite caught the 3-monitors part with the OP's existing setup (even though he EXPLICITLY said it - I think I need coffee), but, yeah, that's true - getting 6 monitors to work off a single video card is going to be awkward.

I've never tried daisy-chaining, so I don't know how easy it works or how well it works. Then again, I've been more of a fan of one big monitor rather than multiple smaller ones. That said, I'm also not aware of any widescreen monitors beyond 3840x1600 currently - and even those are limited for any kind of multiple-individual-screens use, if the OP wants to do that outside of gaming.

Even then, that's a smaller resolution than what I'm going for (4320x1800). These are also 19 inch monitors at 4.5 feet wide, so imagine the diagonal measure when they're stacked!

Anyone know of a VESA mount that supports six monitors...?

There's also that crazy wide, 32:9 Samsung monitor. 49" wide, 3820x1080 resolution. I thought I might want one of those, but when I saw a photo of one, it seemed too short to me - like, if it got THAT wide, I'd constantly want to see things above and below what was on the screen.

I had three 1080p screens but two of them had cracks and were unusable. Made me mad when it happened. No clue how it happened either, I blame my dad's cat even though the cat's been dead for years.

Damn that FOV stretch though, my screens don't do that cause I don't set my FOV to frickin 90 like everyone these days.

32 : 9 = 24 : 6.75

Mine's 24:5 so less vertical
