How to set external monitor to 144hz?

Greetings!

Today I bought a new monitor (acer xf240h) to use with my laptop (a decent gaming laptop with a 1060 in it) and I'm having some trouble setting it up with a proper refresh rate. Windows and Nvidia Experience both state that the monitor is currently running at 60hz and both of them don't offer me an option to switch to any other frequency at 1080p (and only up to 75hz at lower resolutions). I've just reinstalled my nvidia driver and tried out setting a custom resolution (1920x1080 at 144 refresh rate) through windows settings according to a YT guide, but I only got a black screen after trying out the new settings. I'm using windows 10, I have the monitor connected through a mini DisplayPort + adapter to DVI + DVI-d cable. I have the windows display settings at "Show only on 2". How can I troubleshoot my problem? Any help is appreciated!

The adapter I'm using is HAMA 53248 - http://www.conrad.com/ce/en/product/1165519/DisplayPort-DVI-Adapter-1x-Mini-DisplayPort-plug-1x-DVI-socket-29-pin-White-incl-ferrite-core-Hama

Solution
You will need an active DP to DVI adapter if you want anything above 60hz at 1080p.
Like this one:

Or if you want something cheaper look on your local ebay site for one of these:

I have one of these and they work perfect for 1080p 120hz, not sure about 144hz.
it seems like everything that you are using supports 1080p@144Hz.
so just start to identify the problem source:
1. connect the monitor to another computer (preferably with other cable)
2. if the above gives 1080p@144Hz, try to use other cable and video out on the laptop

That's they only option that the online shop gave me when I talked to them about cables.

I don't have other computers lying around. Is my only option buying other cables until this thing decides to work?

the Acer website shows there is no driver for windows 10 - https://www.acer.com/ac/en/ID/content/support-product/6344;-;
is this normal? should I just contact them and ask for a win 10 driver?

You don't want any adapter.
It introduces the chance for incompatibility/mis configuration

You just want a straight mini to full size dp cable for $12.

Don't get me wrong this maybe a laptop limitation but you won't know for sure until you try a straight non converted connection.

That hama adapter should work as long as its paired with a 25 or 29 pin dual link cable

But there is absolutely no need for a double cable or converted setup there at all.

Well the cables is DVI-D Dual link - exactly like the fourth one on the picture. They even shipped 2 of those and nothing happens with both of them. I guess I'll have to search for a mini DP to DP cable now...

what is your laptop model ?

All DisplayPort to DVI passive adapters/cables are Single-Link only, even if they appear to have Dual-Link connectors on them. DisplayPort does not have the capability to support Dual-Link DVI adapters, you would need a DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI powered converter, which runs about $100.

If your computer has DisplayPort and your monitor has DisplayPort, just use a DisplayPort cable. Normal DP to DVI cables/adapters, as a category, will not work.

Welp... Thank you for the information...

well, both your laptop and monitor have the HDMI port. you can use practically any 2euro HDMI 2.0 cable to connect them. The mini DP to DP cable will be more expensive. and honestly the mini DP connector is not that robust. I broke quite a few mini DP cables/adapters with my macbook pro.

Hey, guys! It seems that the adapter was the weak link. I'm currently using the monitor at 120hz with an hdmi cable I had lying around. Thank you for your time and have a nice day!
