I've seen in the amazon the i7 4790k and it's pretty cheap, i have a z97-g43 with a g3258 and i want to upgrade to a new cpu but there isn't alot of good compatible cpus for this mobo. Is the i7 4790k still worth the money despite being 4th gen? I've seen the 4790k compared to the 6700k and the difference is only 6-10 fps. I want to use it a couple of years!

Yeah but is it any good compared to the recent, same price, cpu's that came out? I have a evo 212 and i could OC the 4790k to 4.7ghz maybe.

Yes the i7-4790K is still a good CPU especially for gaming and especially if you already have a Z97. Be sure you get a good cooler with it, the stock cooler is not sufficient. I'd recommend at least Hyper 212 or Cryorig H7 or better.

4.7GHz okay for some games, but stress tested it would get too hot. I would stay at 4.5GHz with a Hyper 212. But you can play with votlage and find your own sweet spot.

Yeap, i have the hyper evo 212 right now, by saying is still good you mean it still handles pretty good compared to the new gen cpus at the same price?

Yes the 4790k is still a very good CPU and not far behind the 6700k or 7700K in performance and overclocking ability.
It's your best option unless you can afford a motherboard / CPU / RAM upgrade to either an i5 or i7 8xxx or a Ryzen 7 all of which have more cores.

I'm not sure an upgrade to say a 7700k would be worth the system cost in comparison, same number of cores, small performance difference.

Yeap, i always stress test 24 hour after the OC.

I just want to spend money on a new cpu and a new graphics, i'm not going to buy a new mobo, at least for now.

Not really, Intel doesn't exactly budge on there prices even though the CPU is a few years old. It really depends on how much your getting it for but a new 8700 (non K) for around the same price will outperform that 4790K.

Still if you find something significantly better then what you had for a bit cheaper then it may be worth it. I found a brand new i5-4590 (sat on shelf in box for past 3 years) online recently for $140 which was a good price IMO and now is in my second system paired with a GTX 780, games well @900P.

Yes it is still good because it offers the same number of cores at nearly the same speed as a 6700K/7700 and can be overclocked to the same. The very small difference in Instructions Per Cycle makes it still a good CPU. I would consider buying a used one to save the cost, ~$250 on eBay right now.

Like WildCard999 said, 8th-gen should also be considered. The sweet spot for gaming in my opinion is the i5-8400. It performs slightly better than a stock 4790K for a lesser cost (not considering memory and motherboard.)

Intel doesn't have anything to do with the current cost of the 4790K because they no longer manufacture them. They shipped those out in the past when they were at full price. Now it's the retailers who control the price, and since they bought them from Intel or a whole-seller at full price that's what they sell them at unless they decide to do a special price sale.

4.7Ghz on air only if win the lottery, other than that your best bet is 4.5Ghz @ 78-80C stress test.

i7 4790k is worth it if you are still using Z97, but if you are plan Z77 and plan to upgrade than no.

Its vastly better than a G3258 (oveclocked or not) and about 10% slower than current Intel offerings. I own both - if you can find an i7-4790k for a good price and the rest of your hardware is still good I think it would be a wise purchase.
