How do I use a camera as a webcam

So i want to use my Canon PowerShot A810 HD as a webcam.
But when i connect the camera to the PC via cable the cameras lens closes and screen goes dark.
On the PC i can only see the pictures that were on the SD card inside the camera.

that is how the canon software is designed on this power shots camera. I deal with a lot of badging software for my work and the only cameras that work as "web cams" or produce "live shots" are the SLR series of rebel Canons Cameras
