Hey guys,

I'm looking to either upgrade my graphics card, or do a complete upgrade with CPU, RAM, and MOBO.

Current System:
OS: Windows 10.1 Home x64
CPU: Intel core i7 4790k (w/ tower air cooler)
GPU: EVGA gtx 980 ti 6gb
MOBO: z97-A
RAM: 16gbs Corsair Vengeance ddr3 2400mhz
PSU: EVGA 750wt
Drives: Samsung 240gb SSD, WD 1tb SATA

Basically, my first idea was to wait until black friday/cyber monday and purchase a new 1080/1080 ti, but then I started weighing my options to upgrade other important things since most of this PC was built in 2014.

I was looking at a possible cpu, mobo, and ram upgrade instead of a new gpu and stick with my 980 ti.

Here are the parts I've been looking at:

CPU: Intel 7th Gen Intel Core Desktop Processor i7-7700K (BX80677I77700K) & Corsair Hydro H100i v2 Liquid CPU Cooler Bundle

MOBO: ASUS PRIME Z270-P with Intel Z270 Express ATX Motherboard - LGA1151 Socket

RAM:G.SKILL Flare x Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 3200MHz AMD DIMM F4-3200C14D-16GFX

So I'm just curious what any of you guys would do? Is my build still fast/strong enough to warrant an upgraded GPU? Or should I keep said GPU and upgrade everything else?

Any and all advice is welcomed. Thanks!

I would go with a 8600k, or better yet wait until 8700k prices get down to the $359 MSRP. A 8600k can be had for $280 (MSRP is $259), but since the 8700k is $415, quite a bit more than it's MSRP, I'd wait on that one.

The fact is you already have a plenty good enough GPU and CPU to wait a bit for better pricing anyway, and even the DDR4 pricing is very high right now. It's just not an ideal time to upgrade your CPU or MB platform currently.

If you want to upgrade, and don't want to go into any "extreme" platforms (X299, X399 etc.) I would definitely wait and buy the 8700k. The pure performance of benchmarks we've seen is amazing, but also memory is very expensive right now, but you wouldn't necessarily need anything faster than 2400Mhz unless you really want faster ram clocks.

GPU wise, a 980ti is still a great card, but if you are looking start fresh, you can find 1080s or 1080tis on craigslist (depending on your location) for a couple hundred bucks cheaper than MSRP. I got my 1080 for $375 USD off craigslist. But if you want a 1080ti new, I would for sure go with the Kingpin or Strix version.

i7 7700k is a waste after coffee lake release. I advise not going with a kbay lake processor unless like me were stuck before coffee lake release
