Best way to share files between 2 computers?

I've been thinking of getting another computer.
One for casual use (internet, word processing, etc.), and either use the new/old computer for audio production which I plan to not connect to the internet.

I'd use the same monitor and the same keyboard and mouse for both PCs.
I heard you can use a KVM switch for that. I'm not sure how to connect 2 computers to the same set of speakers though.

Before I go any further into this venture,
What is the best way to share files between 2 computers? Is it through a crossover cable?
When I access the files on the other PC, will it be instant, or do I have to wait?

Besides files, what else can I share? And how?
eg. resources, computing power, etc.

If one of the computers are connected to the internet either by a second network card or through WiFi, will it affect the non-internet connected PC?

Unfortunately, the router is located a floor below mine.

Would using Wifi be faster than connecting them directly to each other via crossover cable?
Or even using a switch?

Seeing as they both would need to connect to the internet for OS updates and such, connecting to the router, either wired or WiFi, would be the easiest.

OK.
As said, this second PC will need to be connected online anyway, for OS and application updates.
So WiFi that one as well.

Then, shared folders and mapped drive letters.
