I have a 5930k @ 4.5 GHz with two 980 ti in SLI. The gpu's are at stock clocks, but will overclocked soon. The CPU and GPU's are on separate custom loops. I have a Benq 27in 1080p 144hz gaming monitor, but want to upgrade to a 1440p 144hz gsync gaming monitor or a 4k 144hz gsync gaming monitor when available. I usually play Wow: Legion and Ghost Recon: Wildlands. I am planning on using this setup for quite awhile and want to buy the best monitor that will work with my hardware. Do I have enough power to run an Acer or Asus 4k 144hz gsync panel when they are released next spring or should I stick with a top of the line 1440p 144hz gsync panel for fps? I don't care about price. I want a 30in+ display. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

1440p is very much superior to 1080p. I voted with my wallet and bought a 32". So you know I think 30"+ was the right size. But my tastes aren't the universal standard. Some hardcore gamers prefer small 1080p screens because they can keep more of the game in focus. I prefer the better immersion and the more relaxed gaming style this size gives me.

There is no 4k 144hz monitor until sometime next year. Not sure a a pair of 980 TI's would be enough.

Here is the best you can actually buy.

1440p, g-sync, 144hz etc.

It is easier to get smooth frames on and I use the same resolution on a same sized screen and it is very attractive. I have a 28" 4k as well, and I don't like it. The DPI is just too high for my tastes. The fast 4k screens announced thus far are all 27".

You'd need 1080Ti in SLI to drive a 4k display anywhere near 144Hz most of the time unless you kill details. If consistently high frame rates at high or ultra details are important to you and you don't plan to upgrade your GPUs in the foreseeable future, go with 1440.

I am going to use my 980ti SLI config for a few years. I want to run at Max settings at all times. With the benq 1080p monitor, I am getting 150-200 or higher at ultra with GeForce optimal settings in Legion. Is 1440p a big step up from 1080p? I have never used a 1440p panel before.

2560x1440 (QHD) is ~80% more pixels to push than FHD, which means you can expect frame rates to drop by 40-45%.

For the most part, higher resolutions are a much bigger step up in GPU-power requirements than visual quality. How much resolution and frame rate is good enough is a very personal preference, only you can tell if whatever you get is good enough for you.

A 1080p screen is 1920x1080 or approx 2million pixels
A 1440p screen is 2560x1440 or approx 3.7 illion pixels

What you want in FPS is for it to match your refresh rate. When you fall short, you want g-sync to pull your refresh back down, when you shoot over the mark you want fast-sync to pull your FPS back down.

I have the same CPU and OC as you.
With a single 980ti I can stay at or sometimes above 75fps at 1440p. My GPU is overclocked to 1492/4158. An SLI rig is not as efficient as a single card (increased overhead). I recon I would get around 100-144 fps in SLI, which would look very nice.
