So about 3 years ago I got an Alienware alpha i3 version and it had windows 8 installed. When the free windows 10 upgrade was available I upgraded to win10. Right now I'm in the process of gathering parts to build my custom pc and I was wondering if I can transfer the win10 on my Alienware alpha to my custom pc so I wouldn't have to buy a windows 10 key.

Glad to assist , since you took the FREE upgrade , the previous license is not valid and since this was a prebuilt the 10 upgrade license is tied to that Alienware board.

A Win 10 that was upgraded from something else is probably valid to transfer, no matter what the original OS was.

Maybe. I took the hard drive from my 10 year old PC that died and put it into an bare bones case.
Chatted with Microsoft for about 20 minutes and now have a Activated W10 PC.

I told them motherboard died and I replaced it. Maybe it helped that I gave them the original
Vista Product key, and I had the same hard drive.
