My monitor is "blinking"

When I turn on my PC my monitor starts for about 0.2-0.5 seconds and turn off for 3 seconds and it can go from 5 minutes up to even an hour and that drives me crazy. I don't want to buy a new monitor if I don't have to 100%. Is there something I can do to fix this problem. Last week it was for 2-5 minutes so I didn't care that much but now it is too long.

Edit: I already tried to plug the vga to the motherboard and also to another computer and it didn't work.

make & model of monitor. does the monitor use the same power cord as the pc or does it use a power adapter? I've dealt with this before as could be a bad capacitor on the monitor's video controller or power board.
