Why is only 4gb of ram usable when i have eight

Solution
Do you have a dedicated graphics card, or is it integrated into the processor/motherboard? If it's integrated into the computer, that has likely been reserved for your video card. There is usually a setting in the BIOS where you can see that information.

If you have a dedicated card, disable any integrated graphics in the BIOS (if present), and also try flashing a newer BIOS version, sometimes that fixes it.

what does the performance tab of task manager show your ram as? How much is hardware reserved?

Have you run memtest86 on the ram sticks? 1 stick at a time, any score other than 0 is wrong. If you get 1 error the stick needs to be removed/replaced

is it 2x 4gb sticks or 1 8gb stick?
have you checked the max memory check box isn't ticked in the advanced options of the boot tab in msconfig? IT should be blank
