Will the i5-8600k work with an alienware m17x r4?

Im looking to upgrade to the gtx 1070 gpu and trying to find the best cpu to pair with it. The current cpu is the i7-3610qm.

The M17X R4 is a laptop, no? And Ivy Bridge era too.

The 8600K is a desktop CPU, multiple generations newer, and not socket compatible - so no, it won't "work".

In addition, I don't believe you're able to upgrade the GPU in the M17X anyway - so the 1070 is not an option (at least not traditionally, there's probably a way to get it to work externally etc).

Unless you're buying a completely new laptop with i5 8600k and a gtx 1070 that upgrade is out of the question.

Well, the upgrade kit is a new one to me.

As for CPU upgrades.... you have the "best" CPU that's compatible.
Usually, laptop CPUs are soldered and not able to be upgraded.

At $817 for the GPU upgrade, $250 or so for a CPU (theoretically) your 'upgrade' is going to be around $1050.

Looks like the laptop (as is) sells for $500-$700 used, depending on condition.

I'd be more inclined to sell the laptop..... and you could pick up a native 1070 laptop on a modern platform.

You'd work out either exactly the same re: cost, while getting a 7700HQ OR, if your current laptop sold for the upper-end you'd actually "profit" (vs your original thoughts) to the tune of ~$150.
