Hello,

I am currently rocking a i7-2600k with a gtx1060 3gb.
Have 2x27' 1920x1080 plugged in, gaming on one and second is for movies and such.
I would like to upgrade my main monitor to something like a 2560x1440 - 100hz+ monitor.
However, I do not know if I will have issues with display quality and gaming performance by upgrading resolution and refresh rate on my poor 1060 3gb. Mainly playing WoW at the moment, but sometimes fires up PUBG and BF1.
Any ideas ?

Thanks,

Solution
A 2560x1440 (or 1440p) display is nearly double the pixel count compared to a 1080p (1920x1080) one. A 100hz display is also close to 50% more frames than a 60hz one. These combine to having a 100hz 1440p display needing 2.963x the GPU horse power a 1080p 60hz one would reguire.

Your 1060 3gb will struggle to keep up, even if you lower the details.

@1080p, you can get away with the GTX 1060 3GB but when going to 1440p 100+Hz... You are going to require a GTX 1070 for consistent frames BUT with some graphics settings potentially lowered (title dependent).

If you want to run those titles (maxed settings) @1440p rez, given your 2600k CPU, you'd be looking at a GTX 1080 Ti; there may be some bottle-neck depending upon title.

Should I upgrade to a 1440p monitor (60hz) or upgrade to a 1080p (100hz+) ?
Which one would be more interesting for gaming and everyday computing purposes ?

Thanks,

I am not looking to play at max settings, just whatever can get me around stable 60fps or so.
Regarding the cpu situation, I know it's quite old, and with the recent Intel Kernel issue, I might switch to Ryzen faster than I anticipated. Will eventually change GPU as well, but that's another story.
Thanks,

If it were my eyeballs, I would get the 1440p @ 60hz. However even there you will have to adjust some settings down for your current video card. Not too much, just a bit here and there. Like softshadows, volumetric lighting, extreme AA or AF settings.

Here you go for a look-see... Not all are above 60Hz, in fact about half seem to be 60Hz and different types of panel technologies. I'd recommend IPS or VA personally. Bjorn, what's your opinion?

I was already looking at the BenQ GW2765HT which seems like a great deal, and was strongly considering buying it.

VA vs IPS is a matter of taste not fact.

VA is better for me because the 3 to 4 times higher contrast helps me with eye strain. The trade off with VA is that even if the color reproduction is calibrated to be perfect, the viewing angles at which those colors are exactly what they should be is not as good.

IPS has "better" colors. (not really, but on a practical level). The angles at which the colors are "true" is much greater. The trade off there is so-so contrast and frequently IPS bleed (light areas near the edges of the frame).

I bought a couple of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KYCSRSG/ for my sons a few weeks ago when they were on sale for 250. They both love them, they are IPS panels.
I use this one. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LXPX9I4/ which is often on sale for 300-350. It is a VA panel. I would not trade mine for theirs and they would not trade me either.

I like that Phillips you have there bjornl! istouche, that BenQ seems to have pretty good customer reviews (overall) on Newegg as well as Amazon... Got some good comparisons to do with what bjornl posted to it. Whichever way you go, these two seem very hearty monitors.
