Stretched aspect ratio when switching between displays

I have both a 21:9 monitor and a projector which I run at 16:9. I used to just switch hdmi cords whenever I wanted to switch over but I just recently installed an hdmi switcher for easier access and cleaner cords. Now when I switch to my projector all is fine, but when I switch back to the 21:9 aspect ratio it stretches the 16:9 ratio to the monitor. Is there any way I could stop it from stretching by having the pc scan the display perhaps? All help is greatly appreciated!

AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel GPU?

AMD R9 390X

Go to the AMD Settings, turn GPU Scaling on and set scaling mode to Maintain Aspect Ratio.

I did that and now the screen resets to 21:9. but when I try and switch to the monitor it says "invalid format". It's like its keeping the 21:9 resolution and trying to display it too the projector which is only capable of 16:9...

Which monitor is it?
