Is getting a windows key worth it

so i just booted up that free windows 10 thing from a usb that i down loaded from micrsoft and well it sucks i cant install anything like steam and the apps from the app store suck they lagg at low settings and so im thinking that im gunna need to buy a key for better frames and to install steam

No, it is NOT due to your Windows being unactivated.
(there is no "free" version. Just Activated ($$), or Unactivated)

I have a Win 10 Pro install in a VM, to test exactly this. Over a year old (Dec 8 2016).
It runs Steam just fine. As well as any updates from MS or elsewhere.

This game is specifically running in Steam, in that unactivated Win 10 Pro VM. Screencap taken a few days...

Start over, and install a valid Windows version.
Windows 10 Home, for instance.

You'll need to do a full wipe and clean install.
