Acer GN246HL monitor showing up as dual displays

win.7 64 bit,nvidia gtx970,p55 sli motherboard. Bought a new GN246HL monitor and when I hooked it up it would only work with the hdmi cable. If I plug in the dvi it shows up as a second display but I cant make it my primary because it want let me move my desktop etc to the "2nd" display. Can go into bios and get a windows start-up screen with dvi only then "no input" Any suggestions? I'm ready to send it back.

Unplug the HDMI cable when you are using DVI, and make sure the monitor input is switched to DVI.

Thanks for the help guy. I "fixed" the problem by cloning the displays. once I coned the 2 displays that were actually only one monitor,I was able to hit 144 hertz.
