Screen has gone blank while changing screen resolution

I have been given in the office a Dell desktop with core2duo processor running Windows 8.1. Also a 16:9 ratio 19 inch Dell monitor. On the monitor the picture of a circle was appearing to be stretched horizontally. After tweaking with the display setting I was able to get a picture of a full rounded circle. However a message saying "Not Optimum Mode, Recommended Mode 1366*768 60Hz" is appearing on the screen. The system administrator used his admin privilege and tried to set the monitor to this configuration but such a configuration was not available. After he left, I tried to change the resolution and the result is that the screen has gone blank and I can only see the message "Not Optimum Mode, Recommended Mode 1366*768 60Hz". I cannot access Windows desktop or my applications. Kindly help me to get rid of this blank screen gain access to my Windows desktop.

Check if monitor has an "Auto adjust" button or that feature in it's OSD.

I solved the problem by connecting a laptop with VGA output and changed the screen resolution through the same. Then I connected my PC and everything is working fine now at optimum resolution.
