What is the bottleneck in my rig?

Hello guys,

I would really appreciate Your help with my PC settings. I have had this PC for some 4 years now, working very well but lately I can't run the new games on "higher" settings anymore.

Currently, I have these components:
CPU: Intel Core i5-4460
Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB (Kit 2x4GB) 1866MHz DDR3 CL10 Red S
GPU: MSI AMD R9 270 GAMING 2G
MB: ASUS H81M-PLUS

Could You please advise which components I should replace in order to be able to play on some higher graphics settings again? :) This rig was quite cheap back then and worked like a charm so I want to aim for a good price/performance ratio again - I would like to spend +/- 400€ tops for the upgrade, so I hope for example only the GPU is "old" and I can keep the CPU...

If so, is MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GAMING X 4G a good upgrade?

Thanks a lot!

Regards,
George

gpu is the weak spot in your system .
yes:
gtx 1050Ti would be the most sensible upgrade given the current prices of graphics cards .

you can even buy gtx 1060 if you can find it for a good price or second hand gtx 980

no, they are too close it is mostly a sidegrade

you want a gtx 1060 6gb

so make sure your power supply can handle it

gtx 1050Ti is about 30% faster and has twice as much VRAM .
it is not such a bad upgrade these days since anything more powerful is vastly overprised .

but gtx 1060 6gb (if you can find one under 350 dollars ) would be better obviously .

Hey guys! Thanks a lot both for the answers!

Well, the 1050ti converted to USD is some 300 USD in my country and MSI GeForce GTX 1060 GAMING X 6G
is around 600 USD :))) The bitcoin hype I guess... So do you think I should postpone it a bit, wait for it to go down? If the 1050ti isnt such a big upgrade, Im not sure it is worth th 300 bucks...

Thanks a lot again!!

another option worth considering would be to get second hand gtx 980
(it performs on par with gtx 1060 6gb).
if you can find it for a good price (250-300 dollars)
from respectable seller it would be worth it .

Gtx 970 if you can find one at a decent price , theyre fairly useless for etherium so the price hasn't inflated 'as much' as other cards.

They're still more than they should be though simply because of supply/demand.

With card prices I would look for a used GTX 970 it would be a big increase in performance. (GTX 980 if you can get one in budget)

If you must buy new then the least would be a GTX 1060 3GB still a big increase over what you have. (6GB version if you can find one)

Hey guys!

Thanks to all for the answers, and apologies for the late answer.

I do not want to buy an used card, I worry about the status of such items, given the owner could have had overclocked it a lot, etc... so I would rather buy a new one - and GTX960/970 are not being sold as new anymore.

I checked the stocks at local stores and they are mostly out of stock on these cards, so I checked my options based on Your input and I can get:

1) 1050 Ti 4gb for 285 USD
2) 1060 3gb for 330 USD (once available)
3) 1060 6gb for 525 USD (once available)

http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1060-3GB-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1060-6GB/3646vs3639 is it really only 7% difference, at the cost of 200 USD?

Which of these should I go for? It's not like I am broke, I can afford even the 1060 but I do not want to waste money for no reason :)
I want to get a GPU which will serve me for some 4 years again, so if the 6gb version was so much better, I would consider it.

Btw I have this PSU - Seasonic SS-500ET-T3 500W - will it handle the new GPU?

Thanks a lot for Your patience :)))

George

Is that PSU the one with the 'energy knight label' ?

If so yeah its enough , all those card draw lower or similar wattage to your 270.

Those prices are shocking mate in all honesty.

As expected though in reality.

The 1060 3gb is the omly model id consider at that pricing - its the least overpriced of the lot.

Its more like 10-15% behind the 6gb in reality.
Not worth $200 extra though.

Whats your location exactly ?? Ill take a stab
At poland , czech , slovakia regions rather tham mainstream europe ?

I think it doesnt have that label on it, it looks more like this: https://www.google.cz/search?q=Seasonic+SS-500ET-T3+500W+OEM&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiLgKSOw6PZAhURZ1AKHT1qAAUQ_AUICigB&biw=1920&bih=900#imgrc=nkBnZdbVdzRZxM:

Its a VERY old PSU :D I think I bought it back in 2008! :))))

Yea they are, but what can we do :)

Really not worth it? I really want something which will hold for several years and if there is a 1year difference for 200bucks, it might be worth it.

Nice guess!! Im from the Czech Republic, You? What are the prices at Your country? Anyway I checked amazon and it is also for +/- 500 USD (the 6gb version...?)

EDIT: Also I should note that I use to play on my TV and I saw there are resolutions like 6000xsomething (in contrary to 1920*1080 on monitor) - would the 3gb variant handle it or only the 6gb would?

EDIT 2 : This https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GAMING-GTX-1060-6G/dp/B01IEKYD5U?th=1 looks like a good deal?

Amazon.com - you'll get charged tax & import which will add €80 to the price.

If you can order from amazon.de

https://www.amazon.de/gp/aw/d/B01MSW4G4W/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?__mk_de_DE=ÅMÅZÕÑ&qid=1518548058&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=gtx+1060+6gb&dpPl=1&dpID=51k%2BFugheNL&ref=plSrch

Out of stock but the best deal on there easily.

If you have an Amazon account & funds in the bank
Pre- orders can work amazingly well if you're prepared to wait.

That price is the max it will cost.

In the past ive had amazing deals pre-ordering stuff.

I got a rx 580 8gb for £102 in november.
& 16gb ddr4 ram for £70

Im uk , the prices here are terrible same as everywhere else!! :-/

Tax/import fee - OK, didnt think it through :))

Why would they charge it less than the 376€? Sorry, I have never bought anything off amazon :))

Btw I was thinking I would buy the MSI variant - https://www.amazon.de/MSI-Grafikkarte-DL-DVI-D-Afterburner-4K-optimiert/dp/B01IOPQ1VO/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1518548661&sr=1-1&keywords=gtx+1060+6gb+msi

what is the difference vs. the one You proposed? Currently my R9 270 is MSI and it is VERY silent so thats why Id like an MSI again...? :)

Aaah, nice, UK :) had a great time in London. At least You have higher wages out there to compensate for the prices :)

Edit: What about this? https://www.amazon.de/MSI-GTX-1060-Afterburner-4K-optimiert/dp/B01IEKYD5U/ref=sr_1_4?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1518548980&sr=1-4&keywords=MSI+GeForce+GTX+1060+Gaming+X+6G

The msi gaming models are good ,no doubt at all.
Evga though are on par or better .

Nothing wrong with the msi gaming, apart from its 20-30 euro more.

Why would they charge less?

Its fairly simple, amazon have 3rd part sellers now who have 'Amazon Prime' registration.
All stock is sent to amazon firstly ,amazon keep the stock & send out on the sellers behalf.
If the seller drops the price to sell stock quickly for some reason you get the same price on that item irregardless of when amazon get stock in themselves.

As said Ive had some bargains in the past when I was prepared to wait for stuff.
