So guys can I overclock any 3440x1440 ultrawide monitor to 144hz or atleast 120hz with no issues? This is the reason I'm still thinking about whether or not I should buy a 3440x1440p monitor. Thanks for the help.

I just got the Dell aw3429dw 120 hz ultrawide and I love it. I have it alongside my 144hz monitor and the 120hz one looks smoother somehow, probably g sync. High refresh rate doesn't matter if you can't even reach the frames, and your water-cooled 1080 ti can definitely run a monitor like that - I know mine can.

So here's my dilemma I don't want to buy a 1440p monitor with 144hz because I want the extra screen space with ultra wide monitors because I just like it. Now I wanted to buy a 2560x1080p monitor with 144hz at first, but with this PC build I want to make, I really want to use the power of it to power a higher resolution monitor for better visuals in games. But all of the 3440x1440p monitors are 100hz and not even at least 120hz, so I think maybe I won't be use to the 100hz since I game at 144hz and it will be unpleasant. So I was thinking maybe I buy the 2560x1080p monitor and use DSR for 3440x1420p at 144hz but I thought maybe the scaling would be off since the monitor is at a native resolution of 2560x1080p. I really hate aliasing in games and I know 3440x1440p will do great at eliminating most jaggies with proper hardware, but I like high refresh rates too. Any suggestions?

All 3440×1440 monitors use DisplayPort 1.2 which has a maximum of 120 Hz at that resolution, so you won't be able to get more than that on any current monitor. There are a few monitors (Acer Z35p, Alienware AW3418DW) that are advertised to support 3440×1440 at 120 Hz. Most others are advertised as up to 100 Hz with overclocking.

So my final question is, is 100hz vs 144hz super noticeable or not?

DSR is definitely an option however I've tried it in a few games and haven't noticed any difference on this ultrawide. I did use it on anime games on my 1080P 24" monitor with titles such as DBZ which it does make a noticeable difference however I haven't tried them on ultrawide. I can redownload and get back to you if you'd like after work today.

As for 100 vs 144 it is noticeable on FPS games such as BF4.

Well if you could try a few games in 3440x1420 DSR resolution and tell me how it is I would appreciate it. Just to clarify you do have a 2560x1080p resolution ultra wide monitor right? Also does it bother you to play mainly FPS games at 100hz as opposed to 144hz?

I will, still 3 hours away from shift end :( . And yes that is what I have however it's not 100mhz or 144hz, it's 75hz (was broke post xmas and bills but still wanted 21:9). So going from 144 to 75 was noticeable however I don't play FPS as much as I used to and even going down to 75hz playing BF4 to me still felt pretty smooth to a point were I didn't feel I was at a disadvantage.

Even if my system can handle higher FPS when I had my 1080P/144hz I usually played my games vsync'd at 100 FPS, not sure why it just felt smooth enough for the games I was playing (Division/Witcher 3) and I felt no need to further stress the system plus going from 100 FPS to 144 FPS on either of those games wasn't noticeable.

My monitor choice really changed a lot in the past year, before I preferred lower graphics and high FPS but now that I'm playing more casual games I wanted the better visuals to pair with the 75hz monitor.

I actually saw this monitor recently and was looking at ASUS and Acer's new monitors that are yet to be released at 200hz, and I know that the new 200hz monitors are going to be VERY pricey. I think now I'm going to buy that alien ware monitor when the price goes down a little, seems like the sweet spot for ultrawide monitor as of now.

I read the same thing when I bought my monitor on black friday, but that 200 hz asus panel isn't IPS so the alien ware is superior in that reguard, they will have HDR though.they've been teasing those monitors for a bit over a year now, I wouldn't count on them dropping too soon.

that's what I'm saying those monitors will be expensive so I'll just have to settle on the alienware one which still looks amazing, thanks for the help guys!

So I tried a few games (BnS/Division/Witcher 3) at 4X DSR (5120x2160) and I didn't really notice enough of a graphic improvement to justify rendering the game at such a high res. The anime style titles I spoke about before that utilized DSR well at 16:9 don't support 21:9 so trying DSR with a ultra widescreen was kind of pointless as it stretched the game or had the black bars on the side.

Well I guess my best bet is to buy a native 3440x1440p monitor for the best resolution out there right now for ultrawides. Still I appreciate that you took the time to alteast try out the DSR for me, I appreciate it.
