How do damaged monitors function?

If a monitor(1440p 144hz) is damaged upon arrival, will I be able to tell, even if I've never used a 144hz monitor in the past? Do screens work either 100% or not at all, or is there a subtle in-between I need to watch out for?

Solution

There isn't a subtle in between. They either work or they don't. The device they are connected to obviously has something to do with that. I like to use http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/ to set up my new TV or monitor along with http://jasonfarrell.com/misc/deadpixeltest.php so I can test for dead pixels.
